Samsung Display is reportedly trying to push its new 48-inch LCD TV panels into the market, offering them at prices at approximately US$30 cheaper than Taiwan makers’ 50-inch units, according to industry sources.
Samsung is attempting to further compete against Taiwan makers in the 50-inch and below segment where demand is high from China TV vendors, and is cutting new 48-inch panels on its 8.5G line.
Price competition has increased and TV vendors are increasingly looking to more low-cost solutions, the sources said.
Taiwan panel makers have benefited from production of 39- and 50-inch LCD TV panels throughout 2013 into 2014 as part of their product differentiation strategy, which means the new 48-inch panel production might affect the makers’ shipments, the sources added.
Taiwan panel makers are expected to hold the largest market share in Ultra HD TV panel shipments in 2014 and expect to see steady demand from China TV vendors, the sources noted.
